Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is not a disease. It is a complex syndrome that can be associated with any number of circumstances. It is more like an unwanted and unhealthy lung response to stress caused by illness or injury. It is difficult to treat because it gets to the point where the treatment can make it worse and because there's no definitive way to stop it from progressing. It just has to run its course.

Yours has run its course. How badly that course was is individual. All you can do is try your hardest to recuperate. Eat well and abide by the recommendation of your physicians and therapists. You can read on this forum where people have had very serious episodes of ARDS, get well and lead pretty much normal lives. Congratulations for beating this problem and good luck with your continued rehabilitation.
