Cystic Fibrosis

Post a new topicby Guest on Thu Apr 11, 2002 2:02 pm

My one year old has been very sick for several months. She has lost 5 lbs but but eats a ton, always has a cough, always constipated, always has a runny nose, gets respirtory infections often and from the infections she now wheezes and is on a nebulizer. My doctor suspected CF and ordered a sweat test. The sweat test came back negative but I have a gut feeling that she has CF. She has every symptom but the saltly skin. Is there and way she could of passed the sweat test and still have CF? Or is there another disorder that causes the same symptoms that CF does? My daughter is always sick and we want to figure out what is wrong. Thank you for your help, Bails

The sweat test is quite good but is not as good as genetic testing. This can be done easily with a swab of inside the mouth. Has your daughter seen a pulmonary specialist? If not, that would a consideration to help determine what this could be. Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency is also an inherited disease that can cause some of the symptoms you describe.
