Hemoptysis

I am a 39 year old male, stopped smoking 1 year ago, but never was a heavy smoker (about 5/day). I do a lot of sports, but in the last months - usaually after exercise - I coughed a bit more and found some very small streaks of blood in my sputum. I feel generally allright and usually do not cough more than before. My doctor performed a chest x -ray and even a ct-scan, both showed no result. He says it´s allright now....
My question: what can be the reason of this (very little) blood in the sputum and is it necesary to have a bronchoskopy performed?

given that your physical examination, chest xray and ct scan were normal it is unlikely to be anything serious. the causes include a nose bleed that actually goes down your throat and you cough it up, bronchiectasis( a condition that can occur in smokers), bronchitis, or vigorous coughing. A bronchoscopy may be helpful but i cannot advise on that without knowing all the details.
